The Quest for the Golden-shouldered Parrot – An Adventure of a Lifetime

May 14, 2012

Ever since I read an arcticle a few years ago about Golden-shouldered Parrots (Psephotus chrysopterygius) on the Cape York Peninsula, I knew I wanted to go there one day. Once I moved to Australia I pursued this dream much harder and last week it became reality. The Golden-shouldered Parrot (Psephotus chrysopterygius) is listed as endangered and there are only a few thousand birds left who only live in a small area on Cape York.

Getting up there is quite a challenge and there is only one Gravel Road going to the area. During the wet season this road is closed and only gets opened mid to late May. We were lucky and managed getting up there on a rather good road with only a few water crossings.

Golden-shouldered Parrots breed in termite mounts, in which they dig their nests. Photographing them can be quite a challenge, because they only very briefly visit their nests and often only do that twice a day for just a few seconds…

Here are a few first impressions from that trip

And a view from inside the car of the road

Making of…..Waiting for hours under the blind for those magic 5 seconds…
